Werner Lothar Mang (born September 4, 1949 in Ulm ) is a German ENT doctor who works in the field of aesthetic surgery . He has both a German and a Swiss passport. Mang gained international fame through cosmetic surgery on prominent people and is considered the most famous cosmetic surgeon in Germany.

Life

Werner Mang was born in Ulm in 1949 as the son of a forest manager and grew up in Lindau on Lake Constance . After attending elementary school, he passed his Abitur at the Bodensee-Gymnasium Lindau in 1968 .

Mang studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich . During his studies, Mang made contact with Ivo Pitanguy in Rio de Janeiro , a pioneer in plastic surgery. In 1974 he completed his studies and was in the same year with the work of the conservative and surgical treatment of distal humeral fractures at the Technical University of Munich doctorate .

In 1980 he became a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine. He then turned to the field of plastic surgery and from 1982 worked as a senior physician at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich under the direction of Werner Schwab .

In 1984 he completed his habilitation with the text The squamous cell carcinoma of the palatine tonsil and its influence on the immunological system in humans .

Bodensee Clinic in Lindau

Mang is the medical director of the Bodensee Clinic in Lindau. It goes back to a small private clinic for plastic surgery founded in 1990 with operations at the Lindau district hospital. The clinic grew from six to ten and then twenty beds. In 2000 the ground-breaking ceremony took place for the 25-million-euro new building on the rear island , the western part of the island, in the immediate vicinity of the former Luitpold barracks . The new building right on the shores of Lake Constance in a park-like landscape was handed over to its destination as a specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery in 2003 . It has 50 beds in two wards, five operating theaters, an auditorium and a research laboratory. The clinic employs two senior plastic surgeons. About 2000 to 3000 cosmetic operations are performed in this clinic every year.

In 1987 Mang founded the German Society for Aesthetic Medicine , in which he held the office of president for twelve years.

Mang was CEO and medical director of the Mang Medical One clinic group from 2007 to 2012 .

Mang bought more than a dozen old town houses in Lindau through the Professor Mang family foundation and renovated them.

Mang achieved widespread public awareness as one of the first doctors to perform cosmetic surgery in Germany. He wrote several books and at times sold a series of cosmetic products via a teleshopping channel. His public appearances are often the subject of media coverage. In addition, Mang has already been seen in various documentaries , interviews and panel discussions.

In October 2012 Mang acquired the medieval Altenburg Castle near Feldkirchen-Westerham in order to build a specialist clinic for psychosomatics there. In 2015, however, he sold the castle again to an investor from Kazakhstan.

Mang is chairman of the Professor Mang Foundation, which provides operational care for children from socially disadvantaged families. Victims of violence are also treated. In 2012 Mang operated on a Nepalese boy who had a tumor on his face that prevented him from speaking and eating due to his size. In an eight-hour operation, the tumor was completely removed and then the face was reconstructed. Mang has also been looking after the Ramstein victims for many years and performing facial reconstruction operations free of charge. The victims of the air show accident often have to undergo multiple operations.
Mang is the sponsor of the “Do good with good” project and a member of the “Royal Fishing Children's Aid” club, which advocates for the needs of socially disadvantaged children.

criticism

The news magazine Der Spiegel accused Mang of having presented altered medical records in several cases in the case of legal disputes with patients. The Spiegel has copies of original files and modified files as evidence. However, there was no conviction for document fraud or medical malpractice.

The news magazine also reports that in 2009 a doctor, Joachim Hecker, temporarily performed operations independently at the Bodensee Clinic without having a license to practice medicine . An international arrest warrant was issued against Hecker by the Kempten District Court, but it was revoked after a short time. After extensive searches by the public prosecutor's office in the Bodensee Clinic in December 2011, the Kempten public prosecutor's office initiated an investigation against Mang himself in February 2012. He was accused of aiding and abetting dangerous bodily harm in 274 cases because he apparently knew for a long time that the doctor in question had previously been revoked because of a tax offense and that Mang still had him perform operations. Due to the reporting in the Spiegel , the presidents of three medical societies - W. Gubisch, President of the Association of German Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons , P. Vogt for the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons and G. Sattler for the Society for Aesthetic Surgery Germany - the responsible public prosecutor asked to investigate Mang's practices. Mang himself denied the allegations. On January 25, 2013, it became known that in January 2013 Mang was finally sentenced by the Lindau District Court for willful bodily harm in eight cases to a total fine of 200 daily rates . The court considered it proven that Mang had the doctor Joachim Hecker operated in his clinic from January to April 2009, although he knew that he did not have a valid license to practice medicine.

In addition, the clinic's website has been criticized for the name it publishes as a “Beauty Clinic for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery”. This would give the impression that Mang is a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. In fact, Mang does not use this term; he is a specialist in ENT medicine with an additional qualification in plastic operations. Mang completed his training in the 1970s, the specialist training for plastic and aesthetic surgery has only existed since 2005. Mang's qualification acquired at that time also serves as evidence of medical competence in his specialist area and ensures quality assurance for patient care.

The scientific importance of Mang for the field of aesthetic surgery is also questioned in certain specialist circles. However, Mang is chairman of several important medical societies. In addition, he regularly presents scientific contributions at various congresses, which has also made him internationally known.

In the Hohenlohe newspaper described a case in which before-and-after pictures of a breast surgery without consent were published on the website. The Bodenseeklinik paid the patient 3,000 euros in damages.

In May 2016, the Südkurier reported on a case of bullying within the Bodensee Clinic. A long-standing employee is said to have been put under pressure several times by Mang himself and other employees by phone and WhatsApp in her prolonged absence due to illness . The Lindau Labor Court ultimately found the employee right and awarded her compensation in the amount of 14,000 euros. In addition, Mang received a ban on contact with the former employee.
