Johannes Bishko

Johannes Bischko (born August 5, 1922 in Vienna ; † November 5, 2004 ) was an Austrian physician.

life and work

He became known for his efforts to establish Chinese medicine , especially acupuncture , in Europe within conventional medicine .

He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and trained as a surgeon. As early as the 1950s he made numerous trips to Paris and Munich , where he studied acupuncture in detail, followed by study trips to China . Through the scientific processing he created the Vienna School of Acupuncture .

In addition to his teaching and research activities, he founded the Austrian Society for Acupuncture in 1954 and from 1958 ran an acupuncture clinic in the ENT department of the Vienna Polyclinic .

He became known to a wide audience when he performed a tonsil operation in the auditorium of the Vienna Polyclinic in 1972 with acupuncture as a local anesthetic.

In 1972, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Acupuncture was launched, which was renamed the Johannes Bischko Institute in 2005.

He has received numerous national and international awards for his work, such as the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class (1975) and the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna (1987). In 1981 he was given the professional title of professor.

The Johannes Bishko Medal is also awarded in his honor.

In 2019, Johannes-Bischko-Platz in Vienna- Hietzing (13th district) was named after him. Not far from there, Bishko lived in Unter-St.-Veit .

  • 2012 - Another milestone took place in August 2012: the acupuncture outpatient clinic, the Austrian Society for Acupuncture and the Johannes Bischko Institute for Acupuncture moved to the Rosenhügel Neurological Center due to the closure of the Empress Elisabeth Hospital in November 2012.
  • 2013 - ICMART 2013 - Anniversary congress of the International Council of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques and the Austrian Society for Acupuncture in Vienna with the 5th International Johannes Bischko Symposium for Acupuncture as a "Side Symposium" (venue: Society of Doctors in "Billroth -House")
