history

A watchtower is said to have stood in Altenburg as early as Roman times. Around 750 the place is mentioned in the Fagana list of goods .

In 1050 a castle was built by the Falkensteiners , which was destroyed and razed by the Wittelsbach Duke Otto II of Bavaria . Around 1258 a larger castle was rebuilt by the Lords of Schalchdorf. In 1434, Count Otto II von Maxlrain acquired the Altenburg and enlarged it. In 1560 the Altenburg was rebuilt into its current form under Duke Albrecht von Bayern . During the Thirty Years' War the castle was the only castle in Bavaria to defy the attacking Swedes.

After several changes of ownership, Altenburg Castle came into the possession of Count Georg Wilding von Königsbrück, Prince von Radali, from Baron Friedrich zu Hofstetten in 1879, who used it as a summer residence. In 1953 it was sold to an evangelical missionary service and a school for social girl professions started. From 1992 until the end of 2011 it was used as a seminar and meditation center , as a house of silence . In 2012 the cosmetic surgeon Werner Mang purchased the system. However, he did not realize his plan to set up a therapy center for psychosomatic diseases, but sold the castle again at the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015. Another doctor is now planning a surgical clinic there.
