history
Archaeological finds show that the castle rock was already settled in the Bronze Age and that the first castle complex for local nobility stood here as early as the 12th century. The transfer of ownership from the Counts of Falkenstein to the Wittelsbachers cannot be precisely dated. The Auerburg is mentioned for the first time in the Wittelsbach house contract of Pavia in 1329. The castle was strategically located between the castles of Kufstein , Thierberg and Kirnstein and secured the position of the Bavarian dukes in the Inn Valley. So around 1350 the Auerburg is already mentioned as a court and official seat of a caretaker . Since the 15th century, the judicial district has been divided into the main teams Kiefersfelden , Nieder- and Oberaudorf and Fischbach . At the end of the 15th century, the castle was strengthened with the construction of a barbican . After the War of the Bavarian Succession (1503–1505) the courts of Kufstein, Kitzbühel and Rattenberg were lost to the Habsburgs . The Auerburg was from now on border fortress to Tyrol and was reinforced accordingly. Around 1700 the Auerburg was one of the most stately castle palaces in the Inn Valley, as a copper engraving by Michael Wening from 1701 shows. In the Austrian War of Succession , Austrian troops conquered the Auerburg on May 4, 1743. After the Peace of Füssen in 1745, the fortress was razed by Kitzbühel miners in 1747. Only small remains of the castle are visible today.
The Luegstein Castle was presumably a precursor to the Auerburg.
Excavations
Archeology students at the University of Bamberg , in cooperation with the Burgenforschung Dr. Zeune from 1992 to 1998 the castle complex. In the process, buried remains of the wall were uncovered and in 1994 the historic castle entrance was again provided with a wooden bridge. The excavation site is freely accessible today. It is grazed by llamas to prevent vegetation . In the late medieval castle gate on the road to Kiefersfelden, which forms a narrow passage between the rocky slopes and monitored the important trade route to Italy, the museum in the castle gate with a focus on Auerburg is now located. It has existed since 1991.
Say
The castle is linked to a legend. The legend of "Three pagan virgins on the Auerburg" tells of three sisters who were called the "pagan virgins". Two of them cheated on their blind sister. When she noticed, she responded with a terrible curse. Since then, the castle has gone down except for the ramparts.
