Message in a Bottle is an American drama film with Kevin Costner and Robin Wright from 1999. Directed by Luis Mandoki , the screenplay was written by Gerald Di Pego based on the novel Weit wie das Meer ( Message in a Bottle ) by Nicholas Sparks .

Theresa Osborne is a Chicago based editor . After separating from her unfaithful husband, the single mother has had enough of everyday stress and superficial relationships and decides to spend a few days alone on Cape Cod vacation and relax without son Jason . While jogging on the beach one day she finds a message in a bottle . The touching love letter not only inspires Theresa, but also all the women in her editorial team whom she tells about it. Your editor-in-chief publishes an article about the love message "von G." without your knowledge.

The response is a flood of letters to the editor and hints from readers about two more letters in a bottle. Curious about the author and still fascinated by his honest confessions of love, the editor sets out to look for the stranger. Her research eventually leads her to the Outer Banks of North Carolina . There she meets the taciturn boat builder Garret Blake. He has only recently lost his young wife Catherine and cannot yet get over her death. Garret actually turns out to be the writer in a bottle.

Carefully and without telling him about her knowledge of the letters, Theresa approaches the closed man. They both realize that they have a lot in common and fall in love. Garret visits Theresa in Chicago and quickly makes friends with son Jason. During his visit, however, Garret discovers his two letters and the newspaper articles. As it turns out, the third letter is not from him, but a message from his wife, who threw her into the sea shortly before her death. Garret feels betrayed and initially accuses Theresa of having done everything for the sake of the audience-effective story.

Back in the Outer Banks, he lets himself be convinced of Theresa's honest love after a lecture from his father Dodge. He writes one last letter to his wife and wants to throw it into the sea on a tour with his new sailing boat Catherine . However, he is surprised by an approaching storm. While rescuing a family in distress at sea , Garret drowns after saving two people.

His father Dodge is able to track down Theresa a year later and tells her for the first time about Garret's death. He hands her the bottle with the last letter he found on board his boat. Theresa reads Garret's apology to Catherine. He found a new love in Theresa and wanted to fight for it.

In return, individual judgments were very positive. In addition to the performances of the main actors, the stringently narrated plot and the camera work were also praised.

Trivia

Although many of the scenes in the film are set on the North Carolina coast , locations that are about 1,000 km to the northeast have been selected. The filming location for Garret's house is in Popham Beach , Maine . The scenes on the sandy beach were also filmed there.

Awards

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

The film had four nominations for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award in 2000 . But he did not win any of these awards.

Kevin Costner also received a nomination for the Golden Raspberry .
