Ormøya

Ormøya is an inhabited island in the Oslofjord , about five kilometers south of central Oslo . It can be reached in the north via the Ormsund bru (bridge over the Ormsund) from the Mosseveien motorway. From the south end you can reach the island of Malmøya via a bridge .

Ormøya owns two public buildings, the listed church designed by the German-Norwegian architect Bernhard Steckmest and the village community center from 1862 called Villa Lilleborg.

In the past, Ormøya was mostly used as a leisure island for wealthy citizens of the capital, from 1900 it was also common to live permanently on Ormøya.

Origin of name

The name Ormøya means worm island or snake island . Since the strait between the mainland and the island looks like a worm, the sound was called Ormsund (Wurmsund) and the island Ormøya.
