Crusoe (alternative title: Robinson Crusoe - Journey into Adventure ) is a British - American drama from 1988 . Directed by Caleb Deschanel , the screenplay was written by Walon Green based on the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe .
action
The action takes place at the beginning of the 19th century. The southerner Crusoe is a slave trader and is considered greedy. He travels to Africa on his ship to kidnap new slaves. Crusoe survives the catastrophe of his ship and is stranded on a remote island. At first he thinks that only he and a dog are on the island.
A little later, Crusoe comes across a warrior who is behaving peacefully. Crusoe still provokes a fight against the warrior. Later, Crusoe and the warrior live together.
After a while a British ship arrives. The ship's doctor Dr. Martin wants to bring the warrior to London so that he can serve as an object of study there. Crusoe, who is now friends with the warrior, opposes the decision and secretly frees his friend who has been held prisoner.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 21, 1989 that the film had few important things to say - but he said them in a "great" way. The director shows "the secret and the loneliness of his island" as well as the personalities of the characters.
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an "unconceptional adaptation of the well-known Robinson material that did not get beyond a boring sequence of images" because "the characters were only sketched out in a shadowy way".
Cinema magazine described the film as an "idiosyncratic interpretation of the classic".
background
The film was shot in Belgrade and the Seychelles . It grossed around 315,000 US dollars in cinemas in the United States .
