reception
Christian Junklewitz from Serienjunkies.de wrote that “The sitcom […] is driven by the charisma of its star and the sympathy that is shown towards his character. Even where he's wrong (for example, when he bribes the ladies in church to visit his wife's hairdresser), he exudes humanity and warmth. ”The concept“ thus follows paths that are already approaching Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act very successfully. And “The Soul Man” also got off to a good start: as (after “ Hot in Cleveland ”) the second most successful series premiere to date on TV Land . ”All in all, however, the sitcom was“ certainly not a revelation experience. But it's a sympathetic feel-good series with a cute main actor, for whom the production is simply perfectly tailored. "
The series received a Metascore of 65/100 on Metacritic based on 9 reviews.
