Love, lust, faith and dreams is the fourth studio album of American alternative rock - band Thirty Seconds to Mars . It was published in Germany on May 17, 2013.

background

After Thirty Seconds to Mars released the album This Is War in December 2009 , they went on tour until the end of 2011. With 309 shows during a single album, they made it into the Guinness Book of Records . On December 7th they gave their 300th concert in New York, for which a concert film was released under the name Mars 300.

After the tour ended, in December 2011, they immediately started writing new songs. When the recording of the fourth studio album began in April, singer Jared Leto had already written 50 songs, some of them on his trip to India. The work on the new album first became publicly known on April 23, 2012, through an article in Rolling Stone . In November 2012, Jared Leto indicated in an interview that the album could come out before it appeared at the Download Festival in June 2013.

Recordings

The recordings of the album took place from April to December 2012 in the studio called ICAASS in Los Angeles . In September 2012 they organized the event The Summit , which took place for This Is War in 2009 and gives fans the opportunity to contribute choral songs to the album. In contrast to This Is War , where thousands of fans sang for the album recordings, the fan choirs consisted of only 20 to 25 people. The Indian guest singer Deepak provided the vocals for the song Pyres of Varanasi , and the recordings took place in the Indian city of Jodhpur .

Concept and style

Love Lust Faith + Dreams is a concept album around the four themes after which the album is named. The beginning of the parts Love (German: Love ), Lust (German: Lust ), Faith (German: Trust, Faith ) and Dreams (German: Träume ) is announced by a female voice.

Love includes the titles Birth and Conquistador , the theme Lust the songs Up in the Air , City of Angels , The Race , End of All Days and Pyres of Varanasi . Faith contains Bright Lights and Do or Die and Convergence and Dreams the last two tracks Northern Lights and Depuis Le Début .

Stylistically, the album is more oriented towards synth rock from the progressive rock of the previous albums , the use of electric and acoustic guitars is largely replaced by synthesizers , and pop . The band often makes use of orchestral elements, such as the use of strings, trumpets and kettle drums or certain motifs from popular film music, which is why many critics ascribe similarities to film scores to the album. As with the predecessor This Is War , in which the screams of falcons or the singing of Buddhist monks could be heard, unusual instruments and sounds are used with a music box in Depuis Le Début , a xylophone in Convergence and oriental singing in Pyres of Varanasi .

layout

The cover artwork is an excerpt from Damien Hirst's work Isonicotinic Acid Ethyl Ester . The work is part of his spot painting series. Hirst's color wheel with the name Monochromatic Sectors from Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Color Ring, Dark Center is also printed on the CD .

promotion

On their streaming media site VyRT, the band hosted two events called The Mars Laboratory . It took place for the first time on April 27, 2012, and members of VyRT were given insights into the work of the band during the recording. The Mars Laboratory II aired on December 1st for the post-production of Love Lust Faith + Dreams .

On February 28, 2013, the band announced on Twitter that the name of the first single was Up in the Air . A copy of the song was sent to NASA and SpaceX to be sent into space - to match the song title. On March 1st, it was launched into space by a Falcon 9 rocket, making Up in the Air the first commercial song ever to be launched into space. Three days later it was already possible for the crew members of the ISS-Expedition 35 to be the first outsiders to hear the single. On March 18, the song was first presented to the public on NASA TV and on March 19 it was released for download. On the day of the single's world premiere, the band announced that their fourth studio album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams , would be out on May 21st. In addition, the cover of the long player and the track list were published. On April 19, the video for the single was released as a short film by Bartholomew Cubbins, a pseudonym of Jared Letos, who he uses as the director of videos for the band. On May 2nd they released a lyric video for the song Conquistador on Vevo .

In the US, City of Angels was released as a download single on July 30th , and the second international single is the song Do or Die to be released on September 9th, for which the band released a video on August 5th.

The German TV broadcaster ZDF used Up in the Air and Pyres of Varanasi in reporting on the World Athletics Championships in Moscow .

The magazine Entertainment Weekly does describe the "narrative" of the album as meaningless, but the Anthem similar songs encourage to "intuitive hedonism". Stephanie Wundert from CDStarts.de, who rated the longplayer with 7 out of 10 points, praised the further development and reinvention of the band. Also billboard in person by Emily Zemler rated the album largely positive and says that, although the mix of styles is not necessarily generally innovative, but nevertheless fresh anfühle with Thirty Seconds to Mars. For Allmusic , the move away from earlier styles and features is leading to the band's most daring and imaginative album to date. Hermione Hoby from the Observer, on the other hand, describes the fourth studio album as a "long-duration joke" and only awarded 2 out of 5 points.
