Martin Gore
Martin Lee Gore (born July 23, 1961 in London , England ) is an English musician. Since 1980 he has been a keyboardist, later a songwriter, guitarist and, alongside Dave Gahan , singer of the synth-pop band Depeche Mode .
Early youth
Gore was born on July 23, 1961 to David and Pamela Gore in London. He grew up in Dagenham , attended Basildon Comprehensive School , played on a cricket team and majored in German. At the age of 15, his fondness for the German language enabled him to take part in a program for exchange students. He took advantage of this in the summer of 1976 with a stay in Erfde , Schleswig-Holstein . Two further visits to his north German host family followed in 1977 and 1978.
Musical career
After attending school, Gore worked for a bank in London from 1977. At the time, fascinated by glam rock artists like Gary Glitter , a friend taught him his first guitar chords. At the same time, Gore wrote his first texts, such as B. the very first Depeche Mode single See You wrote by him at the age of 17. He later played evenings and weekends in a band called Norman and the Worms . In 1980 Gore met Andrew Fletcher (whose boyfriend he had been since childhood) at the Van Gogh Club and was recruited by him for his band Composition of Sound . Soon after, the band hired Dave Gahan , who was already a roadie for Composition of Sound, as lead singer.
Gore wrote two songs for the first band album Speak & Spell ( Big Muff and Tora! Tora! Tora! ). After Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode in 1981, the task of composer and lyricist fell to Gore. Gore sings some songs himself, especially ballads, and his tenor voice contrasts with Gahan's baritone . In addition, Gore plays guitar, since the development of the band to rock sounds from Violator (1990) also in live performances.

Socially critical copywriter
Since Gore took over the duties of a lyricist at Depeche Mode in early 1982, he has repeatedly been socially critical in his songs. The dark side of the music industry ( Everything Counts ), racism ( People Are People ), sexual bondage ( Master and Servant ), religion ( Blasphemous Rumors ) or the ignorance of the British royal family ( New Dress ) were some of his topics. About the 1986 song New Dress , Gore later said:
“I regret having written this song. In the song of the Princess Of Wales I accuse quite bluntly of just walking around in beautiful new clothes in complete ignorance while the country sinks into chaos around them. At that time I knew little about her social commitment. Little did I know that when I wrote this song in the mid-1980s, she was the only member of the royal family interested in becoming a patron of future AIDS foundations that didn't even exist in Britain at the time. I didn't know she was an opponent of fox hunting. Little did I know that she was taking her three-year-old son William with her to the homeless shelters to show him that it was also part of the country he was to become king of. I didn't know anything about her. I did her profoundly injustice with 'New Dress'. "
Private life
From 1984 to 1985 Gore lived with his then German girlfriend in Berlin . He was known at the time for wearing skirts and black nail polish, which caused a stir. In an interview with Pop Special magazine that he gave at the time, Gore said of his looks:
“Sexual barriers and gender roles are old-fashioned and out. [...] My girlfriend and I often swap clothes or make-up. "
Gore was also one of the first pop stars to admit to being a vegetarian out of conviction. Gore said in 1985:
"I'm a vegetarian and I was long before it was made fashionable."
From August 1994 to January 2008, Gore was married to the fashion designer Suzanne Boisvert. You have three children (* 1991, 1995 and 2002).
In a 2005 interview, Gore said about the 1980s:
“My children find it embarrassing when they see old photos of their father walking around twenty years ago. Honestly, since you first saw the photos, they don't take me seriously anymore. Much to their delight, I have lost all of my authority over them. "
On June 8, 2014, Martin Gore married his girlfriend Kerrilee Kaski. Two years later, on February 19, 2016, their daughter was born. In March 2017, Gore's fifth child was born.
