Gary Glitter (* 8. May 1944 in Banbury , Oxfordshire , United Kingdom as Paul Francis Gadd ) is a British glam rock - musicians . He celebrated his greatest success as a musician in the 1970s. His child molestation conviction , which resulted in a long prison term in 2015, attracted media attention .

Life

As a teenager, Glitter performed in various London clubs. In 1960 his first single Alone in the Night was released under the name Paul Raven. However, there was no success.

In 1965, Glitter joined the Mike Leander Show Band, whose front man Mike Leander later wrote the lyrics for all of Glitter's hits. After the band split up, Glitter founded Boston International (later The Bostons). He continued to publish solo recordings under various names, such as Paul Monday, Paul Raven or Rubber Bucket.

Glitter turned to glam rock and thus supported a continuation of rock 'n' roll in the 1970s. From then on as Gary Glitter he recorded the 5-minute piece Rock and Roll , which was finally released in two parts, Rock and Roll (Part 1) and Rock and Roll (Part 2) . His pompous appearances in the pose of the rock star, with shirt worn open to the navel, embroidered with sequins and wide sideburns often looked like a parody of Elvis Presley . Glitter's success exceeded all expectations and made him the epitome of glam rock for many. Other hits of the same style followed, such as Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!) , I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am!) , I Love You Love Me Love , Always Yours and Oh Yes! You're Beautiful and the two albums Glitter and Touch Me .

Under the name Paul Raven he is also represented on the original LPs of the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair .

Glitter's backing band, The Glitter Band , also produced a number of hits without their frontman, including Angel Face , Let's Get Together Again and People Like You, People Like Me . Glitter himself took a break in 1976, but returned to the charts in late 1977 with It Takes All Night Long and the album Silver Star .

In the 1980s, Glitter appeared on The Rocky Horror Show in New Zealand . He lived up to the self-created role as a break clown - no longer particularly successful commercially - with various appearances on television. The aging rock star also demonstrated self-irony when he was photographed with a cucumber mask under the slogan “Try It Again!” For an advertising campaign by the British railway company for their junior ticket.

Early 1990, he had a modest hit with a cover version of The House of the Rising Sun . Until 1997, Glitter went on tour regularly, the concerts were mostly well attended.

In 1996, Glitter accidentally injured The Who frontman Roger Daltrey badly during a rehearsal for a concert in London's Hyde Park . The consequences of this can still be felt for Daltrey to the present day.

In 1999, he was with a copyright lawsuit against the pop band Oasis successful, for their piece Hello 1995 parts of his published 1973 song Hello! Hello! I'm Back Again . After an initial payment, he has since received a regular share in the sales of the Oasis title.

Child abuse

On November 18, 1997, child pornography was found on the laptop he had given for repair . He was charged and sentenced to four months in prison. As a consequence, his appearance in the movie Spiceworld was cut out.

After his release, Glitter first moved to Spain. When his whereabouts there became known through the press, he wanted to move to Cuba in 2000 , but this failed because his name and photo had previously been passed on to the Cuban authorities. In 2001, Glitter released a new album, On , consisting of material that was written before his imprisonment. Fleeing the press, he moved to Cambodia , where he was expelled in 2002 on suspicion of child abuse.

After interrogation of a 15-year-old woman who was found in a room with Glitter, he was arrested in November 2005 while trying to leave the country on suspicion of molesting minors in Vietnam . He lived with the girl in a marriage-like relationship and also abused another child.

Vietnamese law establishes the death penalty as the penalty for child abuse and sex with minors. In January 2006, Glitter was charged with fornication with two girls, ages ten and eleven. The files of this case show that after paying $ 2,000 each to the parents, the charge of sex with minors was downgraded to indecent touch . On March 3, 2006, a Vietnamese court sentenced him to three years' imprisonment and subsequent deportation after a two-day closed hearing. Glitter himself had protested his innocence and called the trial a conspiracy. His sentence was later reduced by three months. Glitter was released from prison on August 2, 2008 and deported to the UK on August 22, 2008 after Thailand and China refused to allow him to enter the country. He was then one of the registered sex offenders in Great Britain and had to live under strict conditions.

On October 28, 2012, Glitter was arrested ("Operation Yewtree") in connection with the child abuse scandal surrounding the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile , but was initially released on bail.

At the end of the police investigation in June 2014, Glitter stood for investigators in connection with eight sex crimes against two underage girls between 1977 and 1980. In January 2015 the trial of the musician began. Glitter has been charged with various sexual offenses against minors, including seven lewd cases and one attempted abuse. He was found guilty on February 5, 2015 and sentenced to 16 years in prison on February 27. Since 2018 he has been serving his sentence in The Verne Prison on the Isle of Portland, which is specially designed for sex offenders .

Others

In March 2011, his hit Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!) In a version of the American actress Gwyneth Paltrow again number one on the Australian charts.
