Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water is the third studio album by the US Nu-Metal band Limp Bizkit . It was released on October 16, 2000 on the Interscope Records and Flip Records labels .

Naming

The first part of the title is a scatological reference to the appearance of the human anus ("Chocolate Starfish"). In contrast, “Hot Dog Flavored Water” is an inside joke that was invented by Wes Borland . While the band was touring, Borland noticed a jar of pickled eggs at a truck stop and suggested that they do the same with hot dogs . He went on to say that the water should be bottled and sold as "hot dog-flavored water".

Fred Durst himself refers to the album name in both the song Livin 'It Up , where he explains that "The Chocolate Starfish is my buddy Fred Durst" (Wes Borland stated in an interview that "Chocolate Starfish" is a "strange nickname." Fred has for himself ”), as well as in the song Hot Dog , where he says to his critics:“ Kiss my starfish, my chocolate starfish ”.

Cover design

The album cover shows five gnome-like beings surrounded by black fog and lying in a pile of sausages. One of them holds out a starfish with an anus ("Chocolate Starfish") towards the viewer . At the top of the picture is the gray lettering limp bizkit presents and at the bottom of the picture the title chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavored water , also in gray.

Guest Posts

In addition to Limp Bizkit, other artists can be heard on four tracks on the album. The rapper Xzibit has a guest appearance on the song Getcha Groove On , while the track Rollin '(Urban Assault Vehicle) , which was produced by Swizz Beatz , is a collaboration with rappers DMX , Method Man and Redman . Scott Weiland , singer of the Stone Temple Pilots , supports Limp Bizkit on the song Hold On . In addition, Ben Stiller , Mark Wahlberg , Rob Dyrdek and Stephan Jenkins are represented in the outro .

The song Hot Dog is known for using the word " fuck " 48 times. Durst refers to the number of "fucks" in the line "If I say fuck two more times, that's 46 fucks in this fucked up rhyme". The refrain parodies the nine-inch-nails songs Closer , The Perfect Drug and Burn . Durst said he was a huge fan of the Nine Inch Nails, although Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor made negative comments about thirst during that period. Reviewers often interpreted Durst's lyrics in Hot Dog as an insult to Reznor.

Livin 'It Up contains a sample of the song Life in the Fast Lane by the American rock band Eagles .

The video for Rollin '(Air Raid Vehicle) was filmed by Fred Durst at the World Trade Center in late 2000 . It won the award for Best Rock Video at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards . Also served Rollin '(Air Raid Vehicle) as entrance theme of the wrestler The Undertaker between 2000 and 2002 and again to Wrestlemania XIX (2003), where Limp Bizkit also appeared live.

Take a Look Around appears in Mission: Impossible II , My Generation in The Fighters and Rollin '(Air Raid Vehicle) appears in The Fast and the Furious and Hancock . In Take a Look Around , Lalo Schifrin is named as a co-authorbecause of the use of the Mission: Impossible theme .
