The Avalanches are an Australian electronic music group from Melbourne known for their numerous DJ activities and their debut album Since I Left You , which was recorded with approximately 3,500 vinyl samples. Currently (2016) it consists of the members James Dela Cruz, Robbie Chater and Tony Diblasi. Stylistically, it can be assigned to alternative dance and breakbeat .
Career
The Avalanches started as Alarm 115 in 1995 , a noise punk formation inspired by bands like Drive Like Jehu , The Fall and Ultra Bidet . The group officially renamed itself to The Avalanches only on their fifth live appearance, as opening act for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion . As a result, their notoriety grew rapidly. The debut single Rock City was released in the spring of 1997 on Trifekta Records. This was followed by the EP El Producto on Wondergram Records in December of the same year . Due to the success of the EP, label owner Steve Pavlovic signed The Avalanches with his new label Modular Recordings in May 1998 . The group's first studio album was released here.
Since I Left You
Since I Left You , the Avalanches' debut album, was released in Australia in November 2000 and was nominated for nine ARIA Awards. They also won six Australian Dance Music Awards. In England, the first single released from the album, also under the name "Since I Left You", entered the charts at number 16 and the video for the single was named "Video of the Year" at the MTV Europe Music Awards . The well-known hip-hop magazine Juice voted the album number 4 of the best Australian albums of all time. Since I Left You contains numerous samples from other artists, including a sample from Madonna's hit single Holiday in the song "Stay Another Season".
Wildflower
With Wildflower second album The Avalanches released on 8 July 2016 after sixteen years. On June 2, 2016, the first single Frankie Sinatra was released from the album on which the group has been working since 2005.
