Eddy Grant
Eddy Grant (* 5. March 1948 as Edmond Montague Grant in Plaisance, Guyana ) is a British pop musician , singer, composer and guitarist . He became known with the band The Equals , especially through their 1966 super hit Baby Come Back .
biography
Grant's family moved from Guyana to London in 1960 . He co-founded the group The Equals, which had a number of hits between 1967 and 1971. At the age of 23, Grant suffered a heart attack that forced him to step down. He switched to producing and founded his own studio , Coach House, and his own record label , Ice Records.
In mid-1979 Grant had his first single hit with Living on the Frontline . He set up the Blue Wave studio in Barbados in order to live again with his family, who had previously moved to the Caribbean . In Barbados, Grant produced Mick Jagger , Sting and Elvis Costello, among others .
The final breakthrough came in late 1980 with Do You Feel My Love . This hit was part of the album Can't Get Enough , which also included the hit singles Can't Get Enough of You and I Love You Yes, I Love You . With the album Killer on the Rampage , released in autumn 1982, Eddy Grant remained on the road to success. The couplings I Don't Wanna Dance , Electric Avenue and War Party reached high positions in various hit parades.
The album Going for Broke was released in mid-1984 . The two singles from it, Till I Can't Take Love No More and Romancing the Stone , were the next chart successes. In early 1985, Grant re- recorded Baby Come Back . As the guitarist of his former band, The Equals, he had a worldwide hit with this song in 1967/1968. This time it was enough for placements in Germany and Switzerland.
Gimme Hope Jo'anna was the only hit from the album File Under Rock (1988), but was in the top 10 of many European singles charts. Walking on Sunshine just reached a middle position in the UK charts. It wasn't until 2001 that another chart success was achieved with a remix of the song Electric Avenue . Grant last got into conversation when he accused the British band Gorillaz of plagiarism: Their 2010 single Stylo was identical to his 1982 number Time Warp .
engagement
Grant is politically active. His hit Gimme Hope Jo'anna called for the end of apartheid in South Africa - the name 'Jo'anna' in the song title does not refer to a woman, but to the South African metropolis of Johannesburg .
