The Equals were a British pop band whose song Baby, Come Back became their biggest hit in 1968.

biography

The twins Dervin (Derv) and Lincoln Gordon (born January 29, 1948), who came from Jamaica , founded the Equals in 1965 in London . Other band members were Pat Lloyd (born March 17, 1948) and John Hall (born October 25, 1948) from London as well as Eddy Grant (born March 15, 1948), who later became a successful soloist . The name of the band alludes to the fact that black and white musicians played together in it - which was still unusual in the 1960s.

In 1966 the band got a record deal . The first single in the same year was I Won't Be There , which was particularly successful in Holland and Germany. In 1967 the first long-playing record was released with Unequalled Equals (in Germany as Unequalled ) , from it the second single Hold Me Closer in June 1967 , with Baby, Come Back on the B-side. This song was so popular in Belgium and Holland that it reappeared in 1968 (this time on the A side) and became the number one hit in the UK in July . Other hits were z. B. I Get so Excited , Softly, Softly , Green Light and Viva Bobby Joe , all of which appeared in Germany on the record label "President".

In 1976 the band broke up. However, the revival boom in the late 1980s also brought The Equals back to the stage. The new line-up consisted of the original members Derv Gordon (vocals) and Pat Lloyd (bass), Ronnie Telemaque (drums) and David Martin (guitar).
