October is the second music album by Irish rock band U2 , recorded between July and August 1981 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin . The album was produced by Steve Lillywhite . The sound engineer was Paul Thomas, assisted by Kevin Maloney. October was released on October 12, 1981.

Themes and motifs

The thematic focus of the album is on religion and belief . This is particularly evident in the pieces Gloria (with the Latin refrain “Gloria in te domine / Gloria exultate”), With a Shout (Jerusalem) and Tomorrow . But the motif of blindness is also taken up in the song I Threw a Brick Through a Window :

“No one… no one is blind
Than he who will not see
No one… no one is blind
Than me "

The title song October , played on the piano by The Edge, touches on another spiritual motif with exactly 28 words about the interplay of blossom and transience.

background

The recordings for the album were marked by many difficulties, among other things, Bono was stolen a bag in 1981 in Portland / USA during a concert shortly before the start of the recording, in which there was a notebook with all the irreplaceable texts for the album. During the recording, the band was forced to improvise many of the text passages. After Bono repeatedly asked for clues at concerts in Portland over the next 23 years, a 44-year-old woman handed the bag and its contents over to Bono on October 23, 2004. She had found it in the attic of an apartment building.
