Songs of Innocence is the thirteenth studio album by the Irish band U2 . It was released on September 9, 2014. The publication was initially only available as a download, but free of charge. The CD only came on the market in October.

The online music magazine Laut.de received the album very positively in its criticism and wrote: "A lot of light and a little superfluous shadow make the album the most interesting U2 experience in many years". We also learn that Bono emphasized in an interview that it should be a personal album. We had to find out why they were a band, the friendships and a lot more. With the album, U2 alludes to William Blake's collection of poems Songs Of Innocence And Experience (1789). This is divided into two parts and therefore only the first half of a concept. According to Laut.de, this would already announce the follow-up album Songs Of Experience .

reception

“Nobody can invent dynamite twice. But as a signal to set off beyond worn-out music paths, these 'Songs Of Innocence' are a real bringer for U2. "

- Ulf Kubanke : laut.de

“'Songs of innocence' only really gets going late. The gnarled marching 'Volcano' evaporates post-punk to a functional minimalist compact, 'Cedarwood road' lets angry riffs collide with withdrawn verses, while The Edge Green Days nods to 'Boulevard of broken dreams'. But you always have to reckon with Bono's pathos club. "

- Thomas Pilgrim : plattentests.de

criticism

In September, the album was initially only available from Apple's iTunes , which was then free of charge for all users. For the majority of users, the album was automatically added and downloaded without asking them in advance. The majority of people perceived this action as an intrusive advertising campaign or spam , which is why the band and Apple received a lot of criticism from users.

At the same time, artists like Herbert Grönemeyer or Ozzy Osbourne criticized this campaign, as giving away albums to consumers only harms smaller artists who, unlike the band members of U2, are not millionaires and do not have the opportunity to offer an album to everyone for free.

Bono and other band members always stated that it was not they who gave the album away to the users, but Apple, who paid them for the album accordingly.
