John Prine (born October 10, 1946 in Maywood , Illinois , † April 7, 2020 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country singer and songwriter .

Life

Prine began his musical career in the late 1960s as a folk singer in Chicago . Through a friend, the songwriter Steve Goodman , he made the acquaintance of Kris Kristofferson and Paul Anka , who got him a contract with the Atlantic label in 1971. Prine's early albums were not commercial successes, but they earned him recognition in the scene. More and more established country and folk singers resorted to his songs.

In 1975 a semi-successful album was released for the first time, Common Sense . Nevertheless, John Prine lost his record deal some time later. Without further ado, he founded his own label, Oh Boy Records, together with his manager Al Bunetta in 1981 . In 1991 The Missing Years was recorded, sold more than 500,000 copies and brought Prine a Grammy . Numerous stars of the country scene participated in the production of this album. In 1995 he released the album Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings , which was again nominated for a Grammy. 2003 John Prine was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to songwriting of BBC Radio 2 and he was in the Nashville Music Hall of Fame added. In 2005 he released his first album since 1997: Fair and Square , with songs like Safety Joe , about the risks in a man's life, and Some Humans Ain't Human , a protest song about the dark side of human nature, which is a brief overview of reflects the politics of George W. Bush in Iraq. The album won a Grammy for The Best Contemporary Folk Album the following year , and Prine was also named Artist of the Year.

In 2015, Rolling Stone listed Prine 94th of the 100 best songwriters of all time .

At the end of 1997 Prine was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in the right neck area. In January 1998 the tumor and part of the neck were surgically removed. He then had to undergo six weeks of radiation therapy. In November 2013, Prine announced that he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma . He died on April 7, 2020 of complications from a SARS-CoV-2 infection at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Prine was a cousin of actor Andrew Prine .
