Sherri Schrull (born February 8, 1958 in Birmingham , Alabama as Sherri Russell , † June 15, 2007 in McCalla , Alabama) was an American wrestler . She was best known under her ring name Sherri Martel and in the 1990s as a ring companion to Shawn Michaels and the Harlem Heat team. She has been a member of the WWE Hall of Fame since 2006 . She was instrumental in the further development of women in wrestling and was allowed to hold the AWA World Women's title three timesand once held the WWF World Women's title .

Career

Sherri Russell began her career after training by Butch Moore in 1980. The experienced wrestler The Fabulous Moolah took on her and promoted her further. From her she also got the ring name Sherri Martel . From 1981 she gained her first experience in Japan and was even allowed to compete against The Fabulous Moolah for the NWA World Women's Championship in August 1982. However, shortly afterwards she fell out with her mentor, who did not tolerate Russell's party life.

In September 1982 she was injured at a Battle Royal in Memphis , which should interrupt her active career for three years. During this time she appeared as a ring companion for wrestlers Tom Prichard and Pat Rose.

1985, again active as a wrestler, she moved to the American Wrestling Association , where she stayed until 1987 and was allowed to receive the AWA World Women's Championship three times . She was also active again as a ring companion, this time the tag team champions Buddy Rose and Doug Somers.

In 1987 Russell moved to the emerging World Wrestling Federation and was finally allowed to take the WWF World Women's Championship from her former mentor Fabulous Moolah in July . In November of that year she was part of the first women's survivor series match.

On October 7, 1988, she had to surrender her title to Rockin 'Robin, but this was not broadcast until a month later. She played matches in the women's division until April 1989, which was discontinued by the WWF at that time. Therefore, Russell put her focus back on accompanying the male wrestlers and was finally booked as Queen Sherri with macho King Randy Savage against Dusty Rhodes and his female companion Sapphire. As part of this program, she was part of the first mixed match at a Wrestlemania in 1990 . After this feud program ended in August of that year, Russell no longer actively got into the ring.

In the following Wrestlemania in 1991, Russell and Savage were separated and she was the companion of the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase until the beginning of 1992 , after which she was added to Shawn Michaels , whose entrance music she also recorded.

After separating from Michaels in January 1993, Russell got back into the ring and feuded at Tatanka's side with Luna Vachon and Bam Bam Bigelow until July . Russel left WWF in the summer of 1993.

After brief engagements at USWA , Smokey Mountain Wrestling and finally Extreme Championship Wrestling , she switched to World Championship Wrestling as Sensuous Sherri in May 1994 , accompanied Ric Flair for a short time and then became the ring companion of Tag Team Harlem in November under the name Sister Sherri Heat , which consisted of Booker T and Stevie Ray . She filled this role until July 1997.

Until 2005 Russell played a few matches on an independent level. She also had a few short appearances in the WWE at the side of Kurt Angle in 2005. Her last wrestling appearance was in September 2006 in a backstage segment at TNA Wrestling .
