The AWA World Women's Championship was the American Wrestling Association (AWA) women's title . It existed from 1961 to 1991. Like all wrestling titles, it was awarded as part of a storyline .

The history of the AWA World Women's Championship is closely tied to the territorial structure of the National Wrestling Association . Mildred Burke probably won the Women's World Championship in 1935 , a wrestling title that began in the 19th century. A show sport at that time, she retained the title until about 1952, when she fell out with her husband Billy Wolfe , who had a number of traveling wrestlers under contract and who had contracts with the National Wrestling Association from 1949 . As a result, the title was revoked. In a two out of three falls match (a wrestler had to win two out of three rounds) against June Byers for the NWA World Women's Championship , she was stripped of her title in the second round, which she did not accept and the World Women's Wrestling Association (WWWA ) founded.

In any case, June Byers was considered champion of the NWA from 1954 and when the AWA broke away from the NWA, June Byers was recognized as the first official champion, although at that time The Fabulous Moolah already held the title there.

The early years of wrestling are full of incorrectly written or remembered incidents, so the list of titleholders below should be viewed with caution.
