Billy Wolfe

William Cuthbertson "Billy" Wolfe (born February 22, 1924 in Bathgate , West Lothian , † March 18, 2010 in Hamilton , Lanarkshire ) was a Scottish politician and long-time chairman of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Wolfe attended George Watson's College in Edinburgh and later qualified as a Chartered Accountant . During the Second World War he served in the British Army's Scottish Horse Regiment .

In 1959 he joined the Scottish National Party. He was also active in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the early 1960s . In the 1962 by-election in the West Lothian constituency , he surprisingly achieved second place as an SNP candidate behind Tam Dalyell of the Labor Party . In total, he ran six more times in this constituency.

From 1966 to 1969 Wolfe was deputy chairman of the SNP and in 1969 replaced Arthur Donaldson as party chairman. He held this office until 1979. During his tenure, the SNP achieved its best result in an election to the British Parliament by 2015, winning 11 seats in the general election in October 1974 .

Wolfe was married twice and had four children, two sons and two daughters, from his first marriage.
