In 1978 he founded the bluegrass formation "Hot Rize" with Charles Sawtelle on guitar, Nick Forster on bass and Peter Wernick on banjo. This group lasted until 1990, during which time they recorded some critically acclaimed albums for the Flying Fish and Sugar Hill labels. The first Entertainer of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) went to "Hot Rize" in 1990.

In 1996, O'Brien came to Nashville , Tennessee . By this time he had already established himself as a solo artist and released several albums.
