Feel Good Inc. is a song by the British comic band Gorillaz in collaboration with the US hip-hop trio De La Soul from 2005. It was released as the lead single of the second studio album Demon Days . Feel Good Inc. is the most successful song by Gorillaz and is next to Clint Eastwood from 2001 also her most famous song.

background

Feel Good Inc. was released on May 9, 2005 as the first single from the album Demon Days , which was released around two weeks later. While Dan the Automator was still producing the first album , Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn chose DJ Danger Mouse this time after hearing his The Gray album . Only Dave and Maseo can be heard from De La Soul, as Posdnous was busy working on the de la Soul album The Grind Date at the time.

Music video

The (as usual with Gorillaz) animated music video takes place mainly in a tower that towers high above a dystopian city and says “Feel Good inc.”. The view through the window shows a dimly lit room in which several people are scattered on the floor in front of a stage. On top of this, 2D rises from an armchair and begins to sing through a megaphone , Murdoc plays the bass while lying in the midst of a crowd of women. 2D goes to the window and looks longingly out into the sky, through which he sees a flying island with a windmill floating. Noodle sits at the forefront and plays the guitar. With the entry of De La Soul in the second verse, they appear in real recordings on several screens in the room and laugh hysterically. At the end of the song you see Murdoc on stage, together with Russel on the drums, and 2D sits down in his chair again. The conclusion is once again a view of the island, which is being followed by attack helicopters.

The video was created by Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett in collaboration with Pete Candeland of the animation studio Passion Pictures.

meaning

As explained in the biography Rise of the Ogre , the song reflects the overall very dark tone of the album. The social criticism , which mainly relates to the creation of false idols by the media, is presented here in the form of a dichotomy ; on the one hand the feeling of imprisonment within the tower and on the other hand that of freedom on the flying island. While hedonism is indulged within the tower , symbolized by the crowd exhausted by a wild party, the young Noodle embodies the innocence with which she is the only one in the group to escape this urge. Similarly, Noodle and the island are always shown to the chorus of the song, which describes the striving for liberation from decadence . The helicopters serve as a control instrument to track down and eliminate deviants . That's why they end up chasing Noodle on the island and ultimately crashing it, as can be seen in the video for the song El Mañana .

Live performances

For their performance with this song at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 , at which the band received the Best Group award, the characters were projected onto the stage as 3D holograms by Pepper's ghost . The same technique was used at the 2006 Grammy Awards that Gorillaz opened with Madonna . For this a mashup was presented by Feel Good Inc. and Madonnas Hung Up , which in this context received the title Feel Up .

Reviews

The song was generally well received and is considered by most critics to be the highlight of the album. Matthias Mante from laut.de describes Feel Good Inc. as the “Übersersong” of the album, which you can't get out of your ears after just one listening session. For Armin Lindner from plattentests.de , the song is a hit with rhymes by De La Soul that “could hardly be fresher”. Ingo Neumayer from visions.de considers Feel Good Inc. to be the "[best] everyone-on-the-dance-floor song since Outkast 's 'Hey Ya'". Kristoffer Leitgeb praised the "combination of ingenious bass, the simple beat in the background and the unorthodox but successful interplay of Albarn's calm voice and the rap combo De La Soul". WatchMojo.com ranked the song as the band's second best in 2014 after Clint Eastwood .
