Life

Kohlmeyer studied German and Slavic studies in the GDR and is therefore proficient in Russian. He began his chess journalistic activity in 1981 as a participant in the Kurt Richter memorial tournament with a tournament report for the East Berlin magazine Schach .

Since then he has published reports and photographs of numerous major chess events in the chess press and in his own books.

During the competition between Boris Spasski and Bobby Fischer , which took place in 1992 on the Yugoslav island of Sveti Stefan and in Belgrade, Kohlmeyer was present at both venues. While walking on the beach in Sveti Stefan, he was captured by Montenegrin guards and detained, interrogated and threatened with death for a day. After his release, an apology appeared in the tournament bulletin. Since that competition, Kohlmeyer has been the correspondent for the German Press Agency for Chess.
