The Mariscal Luzuriaga Province is one of 20 provinces in the Ancash administrative region in Peru . It has an area of ​​740.25 km². The 2017 census counted 20,284 inhabitants in the Mariscal Luzuriaga province. In 1993 the population was 23,151, in 2007 23,292. The administrative seat is in Piscobamba . The province was named after the marshal (span. Mariscal ) of Peru and Argentine general Toribio de Luzuriaga (1782–1842).

Geographical location

The province of Mariscal Luzuriaga is east of the Cordillera Blanca . It is bounded in the south by the river course of the Río Yanamayo and its source river Río Yurma . In the east, the Río Marañón forms the border with the provinces of Marañón and Huacaybamba , which are part of the Huánuco administrative region . To the west, the provincial border runs along the Pacosbamba River . In addition, the province in the west extends to a distance of almost 500 m to the Taulliraju mountain ( 5830  m ) and the watershed of the Cordillera Blanca. The province of Mariscal Luzuriaga borders in the north on the province of Pomabamba , in the west and southwest on the province of Yungay and in the southeast on the province of Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald .
