The Río Yanamayo is a 23 km (including headwaters : 66 km) long left tributary of the Río Marañón , left headwaters of the Amazon , in Peru . The Río Yanamayo flows in the east of the Ancash administrative region along the border between the provinces of Mariscal Luzuriaga in the north and Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald in the south.
River course
The Río Yanamayo drains the eastern slope of the Cordillera Blanca , a glaciated mountain ridge of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . One of the highest peaks in the west of the catchment area is the Hualcán with 6122 m . The Yanamayo arises 10 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Piscobamba at an altitude of about 2350 m at the confluence of the Río Pacosbamba (left) and Río Yurma-Llacma (right). The latter, together with the Río Chacapata , Río Acochaca and Río San Luis, forms the main hydrological strand of the river system. The Río Yanamayo flows mainly in an east-northeast direction through the mountains. For the last five kilometers it turns north-northeast and finally flows into the Río Marañón.
Catchment area
The Río Yanamayo drains an area of about 2350 km². The catchment area extends over parts of the provinces of Mariscal Luzuriaga, Pomabamba , Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald, Asunción and Yungay . In the south the catchment area borders on that of the Río Puchca , in the north on that of the Río Rupac .

At river kilometer 21 the Río Yanamayo is spanned by the pedestrian suspension bridge Puente Inca Pucayaku . There are plans for a hydropower plant on the Río Yanamayo, which should have an output of 160 MW.
