Pomabamba is the capital of the Pomabamba province in the Peruvian region of Ancash . The city was founded in 1574 as San Juan Bautista de Pomabamba . It is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The city had 5667 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 4495.

The city of Pomabamba is located 360 km north of the state capital Lima on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . West of the 2950  m high city rises the partly glaciated Cordillera Blanca mountain range . The Río Pomabamba, a tributary of the Río Yanamayo, runs southwest of the city . Pomabamba is connected to the surrounding cities of Sihuas (35 km north-northwest) and Piscobamba (13 km southeast) by roads.
