The Macate District is one of 9 districts in the Santa Province and is located in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district has an area of ​​584.65 km². At the 2017 census, there were 3,125 inhabitants in the Macate district. In 1993 the population was 4972, in 2007 3889. The administrative seat is the 2712  m high village of Macate with 332 inhabitants (as of 2017).

The Macate district is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the northeast of the Santa province, about 67 km northeast of the city of Chimbote . The Río Santa flows west along the northern district boundary. The valley of the left tributary Río Grande forms the core of the district. The lowest point in the district is at an altitude of about 525  m . On the southeastern border of the district is the 5,187  m high Coñocranra , the highest point of the Cordillera Negra.

The Macate district is bordered to the west by the Chimbote district , to the north by the districts of Santa Rosa ( Pallasca province ), Bambas , Yupán and La Pampa (the latter three in the Corongo province ), and to the east by the Huallanca and Santo Toribio districts (both in the province of Huaylas ) and in the south to the district of Caceres del Perú .
