The Bambas district is located in the Corongo Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on October 5, 1940. It has an area of ​​154 km². The 2017 census counted 479 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 444, in 2007 it was 500. The district administration is located in the 2975  m high village of Bambas with 136 inhabitants (as of 2017). Bambas is located 11 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Corongo .

Geographical location

The Bambas district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the far west of the Corongo Province. The Río Santa flows west along the southern district boundary. Its right tributary Río Chungay crosses the district in a southerly direction.

The Bambas district is bordered to the south by the district Macate ( Province of Santa ), in the west and northwest on the district Santa Rosa ( province Pallasca ), in the far north to the district Llapo (also in the province of Pallasca), in the northeast on the district Corongo and in the southeast to the district of Yupán .
