The Chimbote District is one of nine districts of the province of Santa and in the region of Ancash in Peru . Chimbote District was established on December 6, 1906. On May 27, 1994, the southern part of the district was detached and has since formed the Nuevo Chimbote district . The Chimbote district had 206,213 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 215,817. The administrative seat is the provincial capital Chimbote .

The 1467 km² district is located in the northwest of the Santa Province. It extends from the sea to the foothills of the Andes . Its length in WSW-ONE direction is about 58 km, the maximum width 38 km. In the northwest, the Chimbote district borders the Coishco and Santa districts . In the north, the Río Santa river forms the border with the province of Virú ( La Libertad region ) further north . In the east the district of Chimbote borders on the districts of Macate and Caceres del Perú , in the south on the districts of Nepeña and Nuevo Chimbote. A large part of the district area lies in the desert-like, arid coastal plain of northwestern Peru and the adjoining barren hilly landscape. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the lowlands. Most of the people live on the coast in the metropolitan area of ​​the city of Chimbote.
