Buenos Aires , together with Chimbote to the north, forms a metropolitan area in the Ancash region on the Pacific coast in the central west of Peru . The city is the administrative seat of the Nuevo Chimbote district in the Santa province . The city had 158,385 inhabitants at the 2017 census.
The city emerged in the 1960s as the southern district of Chimbote, which grew steadily in the years that followed. In 1994 the southern part of the Chimbote district was separated and has since formed the Nuevo Chimbote district. Buenos Aires was declared an independent city on June 1, 1994 and has been the seat of the district administration ever since.
The Universidad Nacional del Santa University, founded on December 20, 1984, is located in Buenos Aires . Aeropuerto Teniente FAP Jaime Montreuil Morales Airport is located on the southwest edge of the city .
