The Stenumer Holz is a forest area and nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Ganderkesee in the Oldenburg district .

Nature reserve

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 311 is about 96  hectares . It is practically congruent with the FFH area of the same name . The nature reserve is bordered on the southwest by the conservation area "Stenumer wood", which has risen in the scope of the Nature Protection Ordinance in the nature reserve. The natural monuments “Grave boulders in Stenumer Holz” (ND213) and “Thick Oak Stenum” (ND212) are located within the nature reserve . The area has been under nature protection since December 15, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Oldenburg.

The nature reserve is north of Ganderkesee on the edge of the Wildeshauser Geest nature reserve . It places a wooded area characterized by natural oak and beech forests on a historically old forest site under protection. The forests are predominantly characterized as oak-hornbeam and hornbeam -beech forests. Alluvial forests are also pronounced along two streams . Especially in the northwest, the edge of the forest is designed as a wall hedge . In the east of the nature reserve, a fallow wet meadow surrounded on three sides by stenum wood is included in the nature reserve.

The dominant tree species of the oak- beech forests on predominantly moist locations are English oak and hornbeam . The European beech joins this . In the shrub layer are z. B. holly , euimus , hazel and hawthorn to find. In the herb layer settle u. a. Wood anemones , large witch's herb , forest ziest and large star chickweed as well as curmuds , flutter grass , winter horsetail , wood sorrel , lady fern and ivy can be found. The beech forests are dominated by common beech and common oak. Numerous holly can be found in the shrub layer. In the herb layer settle u. a. Wire wreaths , wood sorrel, two-leaved shadow flower , hairline cornice , bracken , common worm fern , flutter grass and ivy. The oak is the most common tree species in Stenum wood. Spruce, pine, larch and Douglas fir are represented as conifers . The small-scale floodplain forests are characterized by black alder and ash . This is accompanied by common bird cherry , eu cone and red currant . In the herb layer settle u. a. Meadowsweet , bitter smock , Opposite- and chrysosplenium alternifolium , Winkelsegge and giant fescue and hairgrass, wood anemone, lesser celandine , Oxlip , Large witch herb Large chickweed, ground ivy , wood sorrel, Creeping Buttercup , Dryopteris dilatata and Glyceria fluitans . Other plants in the nature reserve are u. a. Elm , sycamore , marsh marigold , Alpine enchanter's nightshade , black devil's claw , Greenish butterfly orchid , Waldsanikel and Green Figwort . The forests in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

The forest is u. a. Habitat of various woodpeckers . In addition, z. B. nuthatches , jays , starlings and chaffinches are native here.

A public road runs through the nature reserve to the west. Several forest and hiking trails as well as an educational forest trail run through the forest, which also serves as a local recreation area . Local kindergartens and the Schierbrok primary school run a “forest classroom”, in which children should be brought closer to nature. To the north, east and south the nature reserve borders on public roads, which are connected to the locality of Rethorn in the north, the locality of Schierbrok in the east and the locality of Stenum in the south .
