The Mickelmeer is a heather pond near Baccum ( Emsland district ).

The Mickelmeer is located in the middle of the Baccumer Forest south of the federal highway 214 . The water was formed in a dune basin that was formed during the last ice age and covers an area of around 5 hectares. In 1956 the water was designated as a natural monument .

Flora and fauna

The natural monument used to be characterized by a whole range of rare animal and plant species. For example, the extremely rare flowering rush ( Scheuchzeria palustris ) was identified here in 1992 as part of a red list of terrain mapping by the Lower Saxony State Office for Ecology . However, due to the lowering of the groundwater level and the dry summers of recent years (since 2003), the water level of the heather pond has fallen sharply and numerous trees and bushes have settled on the moorland. The open water area has shrunk to just a few square meters. The vegetation is now (2010) by sweeping lawns of the moor grass ( Molinia caerulea ), and flocks of Tonquil ( Juncus effusus dominated). The latter indicates the onset of eutrophication (from the air?).

The most recent floristic features include bog lily ( Narthecium ossifragum ), swamp blood-eye ( Potentilla palustris ), the common cranberry ( Vaccinium oxycoccos ), the thread-sedge ( Carex lasiocarpa ) and the cotton grass ( Eriophorum vaginantum ). At the edge - as remnants of larger heather areas - individual junipers ( Juniperus communis ) could be found. Furthermore, numerous dragonflies live by the pond, such as the glossy rush damsel and the high moor mosaic damsel . The occurrence of the moor frog , the blue cranberry and the adder are also documented .

In the course of maintenance measures, the trees and bushes flown to are removed from the area. Three peat water levels should provide information about the current groundwater conditions in the wetland threatened with drying out.
