Platy ( Greek Πλατύ ( n. Sg. ); [ Plɑˈti ], alternative transcription: Plati ) is a municipality in the northern Greek municipality of Alexandria . To distinguish it from communities of the same name and localities in other regions of Greece, the locality is also called Platy Imathias (Πλατύ Ημαθίας; Platy in Imathia).

geography

The municipality of Alexandria is located in the Central Macedonian Plain on the southeastern edge of the Imathia regional district . The municipality of Platy is bounded in the north by the Loudias river and in the south by the Aliakmonas river . The eastern boundary of the municipality is the Thermaic Gulf . The municipality lies entirely in the south-central Macedonian plain, which was formed by alluvial land of the rivers Aliakmonas, Axios, Loudias and Gallikos and is very flat.

In 2011 the municipality had 9,614 inhabitants, the capital 2083.

history

Like many settlements in the Greek region of Macedonia , Platy was founded in 1924 by refugees from the Asia Minor catastrophe . The original settlers come from Farassa in Cappadocia and settled in a place that is conveniently connected by the Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway. Since 1932 the place was classified as a rural community (kinotita) , since 1994 as an urban community (dimos) . Until the Greek administrative reform in 2010 , Platy remained an independent municipality ( Dimos Plateos Δήμος Πλατέος).

economy

The economy in Platy is very agricultural. The main crops are sugar and cotton . Existing industry withdrew during the economic crisis of 1999–2002, only a state-run sugar factory remained.

The station Platy is a hub in the network of Greek railways . Here - coming from Thessaloniki - the railway line to Athens and the railway line to Florina (formerly to Bitola ) branch .
