Andimachia ( Greek Αντιμάχεια ( f. Sg. ), Also Antimáchia) is a small town in the center of the Greek island of Kos. The area is divided into the settlement area on a low high plateau and a lower level that connects to the southwest. This is where the Kos- Hippocrates Airport was opened in 1964 . The main branch of the economy is agriculture with cultivation u. a. of grain, tobacco and sesame, as well as animal husbandry, and more recently tourism.
history
Andimachia goes back to an ancient settlement. The river Kyparissos flowed through the place , on the banks of which Asklepios , the Greek god of healing, was worshiped in antiquity . In addition, a cult of Heracles has come down to us.
The place suffered severe damage in 1926, especially the 1933 earthquake. After the annexation of the Dodecanese to Greece, Andimachia was the administrative seat of the then rural community Andimachia ( Κοινότητα Αντιμαχείας Kinótita Andimachías ) from 1948 . With the implementation of the municipality reform in 1997 , Andimachia became the administrative seat of the newly formed municipality of Iraklidis , which in turn became part of the municipality of Kos as part of the administrative reform in 2010 .

Location and traffic
The place is relatively central between the Kefalos peninsula in the southwest and the capital Kos in the far east. Together with the construction of the airport, the main road between Kos and Kefalos was relocated to the east and south of Andimachia as a bypass and, with the expansion of the airport, was expanded to include the runway to the west of the town. Today it forms, together with the connection to Mastichari branching off to the north, almost a ring around the city with a total of eight entrances to the settlement. The road to the airport branches off at the southern roundabout. From Mastichari there is a ferry connection to Kalymnos .
The place is connected to the capital of the island via the long-distance bus operator KTEL , and the bus routes to Kardamena and Kefalos stop on the outskirts of Andimachia.
Attractions
In the center of the village is the last of around 100 former windmills that existed in this agricultural area. Grain was occasionally ground here until 2000. It was closed in 2001, after which it was renovated by the community and reopened as a museum. Diagonally opposite is the “Traditional House”, another museum, a farmhouse built around 1850 with three main rooms. It was renovated by the local cultural and beautification association and furnished with objects from the first half of the 20th century . The rural way of life of a family up to the 1950s is shown. Both museums are aimed at tourists and as educational institutions for the island's youth.
- About three kilometers southeast of the town, halfway to Kardamena, is the medieval fortress of Andimachia . It is a higher-lying, freely accessible ruin complex with individual fully or partially rebuilt buildings and a distant view of the southern part of the island.
- Behind the airport is the Plaka forest (Dásos Plákas), a popular excursion destination with locals.

Festivals and traditions
In the city there is a parade on the evening of Pentecost Sunday with traditional music and dance, as well as a parish festival on September 15 at the Agios Nikitas chapel with goat soup and wine. There are other festivals on July 29th and August 15th, as well as on Carnival Sunday.
