Kefalos ( Greek Κέφαλος ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town on the peninsula of the same name, Kefalos, on the Greek island of Kos .

Location, geography, traffic

To the west of a 1.6 km narrow isthmus of the island of Kos lies the Kefalos Peninsula ( Κέφαλος χερσόνησος ) with the 426 m high mountain Latra (also Lathra or Λάτρα , formerly known as prion ) in the extreme south.

The small town of Kefalos is about 3.5 kilometers southwest of this isthmus and about 42 kilometers southwest of the city of Kos or about 33 kilometers as the crow flies at about 100 meters above sea level (center of the city) on a high plateau. In front of Kefalos is the Gulf of Kefalos . The main road connecting the island between Kos and Kefalos ends here. Kefalos is around 13 km as the crow flies from Kos Airport (around 17 km by road).

Upstream of Kefalos is Kamari, which is the port for Kefalos (about one kilometer southeast of Kefalos). Kamari is very touristy. From the town of Kefalos the settlement of Kambos and the two small islands in the bay in front of it can be seen. On the larger one, Kastri ( Καστρί ), is the chapel of Agios Nikolaos ( Άγιος Νικόλαος ). Opposite the small island of Kastri on the beach at Kambos are the ruins of two churches ( Agios Stefanos ), which gave the bay its name.

history

Due to the excavations in the cave of Aspri Petra in 1922, it is documented that there was already a settlement on the Kefalos peninsula in the Neolithic Age . Near Kefalos (about 3 kilometers away) was the capital of Kos in ancient times: Astypalaia ( Ἀστυπάλαια ). Hippocrates of Kos (* around 460 BC; † around 370 BC), one of the most famous doctors of antiquity, is said to have been born near this ancient capital. The earthquake of 213 BC Most of the old buildings were destroyed on the Kefalos peninsula.

In June 1457 the island of Kos was besieged by the Ottoman Empire. After the fortress Neratzia in the city of Kos and the Peripato castle and the surrounding area had been abandoned, the island population (12,000 people) withdrew to the fortresses Palio Pyli , the fortress near Kefalos and the fortress Andimachia . The ruins of the medieval castle of the Order of St. John near Kefalos still bear witness to the strategic importance of the bay in the Middle Ages.

In 1915 the Suffren , a ship of the line of the French Navy returned to its anchorage at Kamari and collided with the British freighter Saint Oswald, which was evacuating horses from Gallipoli. The freighter Saint Oswald sank and the Suffren was severely damaged.
