Kardamena ( Greek Καρδάμαινα ( f. Sg. ), Called Alsarna in ancient times ) is a small town on the Greek island of Kos .

Location, geography, traffic

Kardamena is located about 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Kos at about 1 to 7 meters above sea level (center of the city). It is about 6 kilometers to Kos Airport.

The place is located on the southern side of the island of Kos, directly on the sea, roughly in the middle between Kefalos in the southwest and the capital Kos in the far east. To the island's main road, which runs between Kos and Kefalos, there is an extended spur road from Kardamena to Andimachia .

Kardamena is connected to Kos by bus lines. Bus lines to and from Kardamena and Kefalos stop on the outskirts of Andimachia.

From Kardamena there are boat connections to the neighboring island of Nisyros , but these are only partially served in winter. Excursion boats from Kardamena run daily to Nisyros during the summer months. The fortress of Andimachia (Κάστρο Αντιμάχειας) once had a strategic position on a plateau about 170 m above the bay of Kardamena and allowed the control of this sea route between Kos and the island of Nisyros in the south.

history

In ancient times , Alsarna was one of the six communities on the island of Kos. Alsarna was an important religious center at that time, as the Temple of Apollo and other smaller temples from the Hellenistic period testify. Alasarna was also an important settlement in Roman and early Christian and Byzantine times. Kardamena was partly built on the territory of the ancient city of Alasarna in 1865. That is why Kardamena is considered the newest settlement on the island, although the roots go back a long way. Kardamena has since developed from a fishing village into a tourist destination.

Population and political structure, economy

Kardamena belongs to the municipality of Iraklides ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Ηρακλειδών ) with a total of 6826 inhabitants, which in turn is subdivided into three districts with seven places. The district of Kardamena ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Καρδαμαίνης ) only includes the place Kardamena with 1650 inhabitants.
