The Greek airport Karpathos (Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Καρπάθου; airport code: LGKP, IATA code: AOK) is located about 15 km from the main town of Karpathos at the south-western end of the island of Karpathos and has been in operation since 1970. The current runway, 2.4 km long and 30 m wide, was completed in 1986.

No instrument landing system is installed at the airport . In addition to the previously existing non-directional radio beacon , a VOR rotary radio beacon for landings from both directions has also been available since July 1, 2010 . Due to the strong north- westerly winds as a result of the Meltemi , almost all landings are carried out from the east on runway 30 during the summer season. If the Scirocco determines the prevailing wind direction in spring and autumn, the approach is from the west on runway 12. The airport has no fixed operating / opening times. Instead, these are published via NOTAM .

Airlines and Destinations

Olympic Air scheduled flights connect Karpathos with Athens, Rhodes, Kasos and Sitia all year round . Charter and low-cost airlines also land in Karpathos between April and October . In the summer of 2011, machines will come from Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Vienna, Linz, Graz, Oslo, Copenhagen, Milan, Verona, Rome and Amsterdam, among others. Three large aircraft (type Boeing 737 or similar) and 2 aircraft the size of the ATR type as well as several smaller aircraft can be placed on the apron at the same time .

Furnishing

There is no bus connection to the airport. You must therefore arrive in your own car or taxi. Package tourists are picked up by the tour operator's buses and rental cars are brought to the airport on request.

In July 2009, a new terminal was put into operation as a replacement for the previous terminal building, which meets the requirements of modern airport operations. The arrival and departure areas are separated from each other within the building. An automatic baggage handling system was also installed. In the public area there are several check-in counters, a shop and the counters of some car rental companies. Behind the security check there is a large waiting hall with several exits to the airside . A duty-free shop has also been set up here. The terminal has no passenger boarding bridges, which is why passengers are transported to and from the aircraft by bus.

On the land side, there is a driveway and a parking lot in front of the terminal.
