The Alexandroupoli "Democritus" International Airport ( Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Αλεξανδρούπολης "Δημόκριτος" Kratikós Aeroliménas Alexandroupolis "Dimokritos" English Alexandroupoli International Airport "Democritus" ) is the airport of the Greek city of Alexandroupoli . The airport, which opened in 1944, was named after the Greek philosopher Democritus . It received its status as an international airport in 1955. In 1975 it was expanded. Every year around 4000 flights with a total of over 150,000 arriving and departing passengers are counted. The airport is connected to the transport network by bus connections, taxis and rental car services. In 2009, the expansion and expansion of the main building began. This expansion has now been completed and has given the airport its current appearance (as of 2018).
Military use
In addition to its civil use, the airport is also a military base for the Greek Air Force . A cargo plane flies to Skyros and Thessaloniki every week .
Civil use
Aegean Airline , Olympic Air and Sky Express are currently using the airport for domestic flights. Athens is the main destination , with Sitia and Heraklion on the island of Crete recently also being direct destinations (as of 2018).
