The Corfu Airport (also airport Ioannis Kapodistrias , Kerkyra International Airport or Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport , Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Κέρκυρας "Ιωάννης Καποδίστριας" ) is the international airport of the Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra) three kilometers south of the center of the island capital Kerkyra (Corfu).
The specialty of the airport lies in the unusual location of the runway , which is almost entirely surrounded by water and lies between two hills. It begins in the sea with a large round turning area, to the west is the sea bay and to the east is Lake Halikiopoulou. For safety reasons, traffic on the main road EO25, which is almost immediately behind the runway, has to be stopped by means of traffic lights every time the aircraft takes off and every landing, as the safety area is on the other side of the road. The airport is also very popular with aircraft photographers due to its location .
The airport consists of only one terminal, with charter flights providing the main traffic . Furthermore, domestic Greek scheduled flights z. B. to Athens and Thessaloniki with Olympic Air , Aegean Airlines or Sky Express . From Germany z. B. Condor or Eurowings scheduled flights to Corfu. During the main summer season, a plane takes off about every half hour. There are only 16 counters available for handling passengers.
