The old Paros Airport (1982) ( English Panteleou Paros Airport , Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Πάρου Kratikos Aerolimenas Parou ) was a small airport on the island of Paros . It is located on the west coast of the island and was replaced by the new Paros Airport , which opened in 2016 and is just under 2 kilometers northwest of it .
The airport is served by Olympic Air , which has been a subsidiary of Aegean Airlines since 2013 , within the framework of the mandatory routes (PSO - Public Service Obligation). With the opening of the new airport in 2016, the range of flights to Paros was expanded.
Location and transport links
The old airport is located approx. 9 km south-southwest of the port city of Parikia on Paros. A bus line from Parikia (about 30 minutes travel time) operated depending on the departure and arrival times of the flights. The airport was also accessible by car and taxi.
history
The airport opened on October 5, 1982. In 1985 an asphalt runway was built. Paros Airport has been a national airport since 1989, while previously it only had regional status. Because of its small size, it could only land small aircraft. Therefore Paros is mainly served by ferry from Piraeus.
The new airport opened on July 25, 2016. Its 1,400 meter long and significantly wider runway now also enables larger aircraft to land.
Incidents
On May 2, 1997, a Dornier 228-201 from Olympic Aviation ( aircraft registration number SX-BHG ) touched down very hard on landing at Paros Airport shortly before the runway threshold, causing the landing gear to collapse. All 20 occupants survived the accident; the machine was totaled.
