history

Freidorf, Josephinische Landesaufnahme 1769–72

In 1984, human bones were found in the foundations of a factory during construction. Archaeologists found remains of a Dako-Romanesque settlement from the 3rd / 4th centuries. Century, overlaid by a 5th century necropolis . Systematic research continues to this day.

The first settlers from the Swabian Mountains named the place after the village of their origin, Freidorf in Alsace . The place was first mentioned in May 1719 in a request to Emperor Charles VI. In 1720 Freidorf was recorded on a map for the first time, at that time with eight houses. The founder of the community, Franz Paul von Wallis , had a vegetable garden laid out for the general kitchen on part of the village. This created a village whose inhabitants were mainly involved in commercial horticulture. The settlers built a school and a windmill, as well as a Catholic church; the first still made of wood, the second and still existing parish church of Saint Roch in 1736 made of bricks.

In 1836 the population was hit by a cholera epidemic. In 1850 Hungarian and Romanian families also settled here. In addition to agricultural products, they also produced bricks for the growing city of Timisoara.

Timisoara was besieged by Hungarian troops during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49 , but the city's military remained loyal to the Austrian emperor. The Hungarian general Józef Bem set up a military camp in Freidorf. During this time, Bem lived in the Freidorfer rectory. Among his soldiers was the Hungarian poet and folk hero Major Sándor Petőfi , for whom a monument was unveiled in Freidorf in 1889. Hundreds of Hungarians still gather in Petőfi Park on March 15th every year to lay wreaths at his monument. After the integration of the Banat into the Kingdom of Hungary , Freidorf was called Szabadfalu or Szabadfalva between 1894 and 1918 .

On October 3, 1998, a memorial to the German soldiers who died in the First World War was inaugurated in the Freidorf cemetery .
