history
A first documentary mention of the village took place in the papal tithe registers from the years 1332-1337, when the estate was owned by Stephan de Berukzo. In 1448 Johann Hunyadi gave Peter von Beregsau the title of nobility.
On the Josephine land survey of 1717, the place Beregh-Schoh is registered. After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718), when the Banat became a Habsburg crown domain , Beregsow was part of the Temescher Banat .
Beregsau was systematized during the Habsburg era, but was not populated by Germans like the surrounding villages and so retained its Romanian character. About 500 meters south of Beregsau, the Empress Maria Theresa settled a settlement called Emlek with Germans. This settlement was dissolved in 1933. The residents moved to the surrounding villages, such as Sânmihaiu German and Săcălaz .
In 1802, Beregsau was owned by Sava Vukovics. Vukovics arranged for the church to be built in 1809–1912. In the revolutionary year of 1848, the Vukovics family was expropriated because Sava Vukovics son was directly involved in the revolution as a minister in the provisional government of Kossuth . The property then changed hands several times before finally becoming the property of the Romanian National Bank Timișoara, which parceled out the land and sold it to the villagers.
On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, to which Beregsau also belongs, fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
After the Second World War, Beregsău Mare experienced a huge economic boom through the establishment of the pig fattening and meat processing combine COMTIM.
Since 1972 Beregsău Mare belongs to the municipality of Săcălaz.
COMTIM
The agro-industrial pig fattening and meat processing combine COMTIM, founded in 1967, was an important economic factor for the entire region. Under the direction of Florentin Cârpanu, this developed into one of the largest companies of its kind in the world. With 15,000 employees, COMTIM was the largest employer in the region. 1.5 million pigs were bred here annually. After 1989 the company was privatized and in 2004 bought by the American Smithfield Foods .
