Hans Gehl

Hans Gehl (born February 7, 1939 in Vladimirescu , German  Glogowatz , Kingdom of Romania ) is a German and linguist from the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians .

Life

Hans Gehl attended the Horticultural School and Theoretical Lyceum in Lipova from 1952 to 1956 and then studied German and Romanian Studies until 1961 and Romance Studies by distance learning from 1963 to 1969 at the University of the West Timișoara . Gehl was also a German, Romanian, English and French teacher from 1961 to 1972 at various elementary schools and grammar schools in the Banat and from 1972 to 1985 at the foreign language chair at the Timişoara Technical University "Traian Vuia" . In December 1976 Hans Gehl received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Timisoara in German dialectology. His dissertation on the Banat dialects was published in 1991 as a supplement to the journal for dialectology and linguistics . This was followed by collaboration on the planned Banat German dictionary (1978–1985) and the publication of five anthologies with contributions to the folklore of the Banat Germans at the suggestion and with the support of Nikolaus Berwanger (Timisoara: Facla Verlag, 1973–1984).

On May 28, 1985, the Gehl family was resettled from Romania to the Federal Republic of Germany, with their homes in Freiburg im Breisgau and Tübingen . From October 1, 1987 to February 29, 2004, Gehl was head of the research area Danube Swabian Dialectology and Folklore at the Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies in Tübingen. From 1990 to 2006 Gehl was a member of the Commission for German and Eastern European Folklore. V. in the German Society for Folklore and from 1976 to 2006 member of the Schubert Choir Timisoara , which continues to exist in Germany from 1985 to today and organizes concerts every year.

In collaboration with specialist colleagues from Germany and Austria, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia, Gehl undertook field research from 2000 to 2003 on the topic of folk culture in the Upper Tisza Basin; Influence of the German settlers on the other ethnic groups in this region and conferences with trilingual conference proceedings in Großwardein / Oradea 1999 and Sathmar / Satu Mare 2003.

Gehl led international conferences and gave scientific lectures, especially in the area of ​​the language and folklore of the Danube Swabians (from 1987 to today), published 21 volumes as well as numerous magazine articles (in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania) on the Danube Swabians and neighboring ethnic groups East Central Europe. There are also German and Romanian guest lectures on his research areas.

In retirement, Hans Gehl advises voluntary graduates, doctoral students and scholars from Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany. He also supports the editors of the “Glogowatzer Jahresheftes” and the “Temeschburger Heimatblatt”, looks after the dialect website “Mei Mottersproch” of the Banater Post and also helps with other projects of the HOG and the Landsmannschaft der Banat Swabians .
