The Millennium Church ( Romanian Biserica Millennium , also Biserica Parohială "Sfânta Fecioară Maria, Regină" ) in the II. District Fabric ( German  factory town ) is the largest Roman Catholic church in the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German  Temeswar ). It is located south of Bulevardul 3 August 1919 on Piața Romanilor , southwest of Piața Traian .

history

Built in 1726, the Catholic community of Timisoara on the Piaţa Vârful cu Dor near the beer factory in the Baroque style held Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary . With the industrial growth in the factory town, the number of local Catholics also increased, so that the old parish church turned out to be too small over time.

The new construction of the Millennium Church began in 1896 according to the plans of the architect Ludwig von Ybl . After its completion, it was on October 13, 1901 on the occasion of the Millennium celebrations of the Kingdom of Hungary by Bishop Alexander III. Dessewffy ordained .

The old Church of the Birth of Mary was left to the Greek Catholic community .

The Millennium Church is the largest Catholic church building in Timișoara; it can hold up to 3000 people. Their architectural style has neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic features. About four million bricks were used to build the church.

The front of the monumental building impresses with its portal , above which three statues are placed, the middle one depicting Jesus Christ with the cross, flanked on the left and right by the apostles Peter and Paul .

The rose window above contains eight painted glass windows . The two towers of the church are 65 meters high. They are also equipped with different windows and show the time with their tower clocks . The crossing tower is 45 meters high. The big bell weighs 2,420 kilograms and comes from Antal Novotny's workshop .

The Millennium Church is a three-aisled basilica with a transept . An octagonal crossing tower stands above the crossing . The altarpiece by Georg Vastag shows Mary with a crown and scepter and the baby Jesus in her arm. The artistic wall painting was done by the decorative painters Karl Kremper and Sons .

Holy Mass is celebrated in Hungarian , German, Romanian , and every Saturday evening in Italian .

organ

Carl Leopold Wegenstein , who had delivered his first large organ for the Katharinenkirche in the inner city in 1896 , also received the order to build the organ for the Millennium Church in the same year . The cost of the technically advanced organ was paid for by Bishop Alexander III. Worn dessewffy. The church and the organ were consecrated in the same year.

Between 1928 and 1930, at the request of the church musician Paul Wittmann at the time, the console was moved further forward and turned so that he could conduct the choir at the same time. In 1979 the organ was renovated and rebuilt by Walter Kindl , after which the disposition looks as follows:
