The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( Romanian Biserica Nașterea Maicii Domnului ) is a Romanian Orthodox church on the Piața Alexandru Mocioni in the III. District Elisabetin ( German Elisabethstadt ) of the western Romanian city Timișoara ( German Timişoara ).
history
The construction of the Romanian Orthodox parish church on Piața Alexandru Mocioni was suggested by Iacob Marian and Emanoil Ungurianu as early as 1921 . The Avocat Ungureanu contributed the property in 1925, and Ioan Imbroane , the then professor of religion at the Carmen Sylva Lyceum , collected donations from parishioners, including a major donation from lawyer Cornel Nicoara .
After the foundation stone was laid by Bishop Grigorie Comşa , the church was built between 1932 and 1936 according to the plans of Victor Vlad , a professor at the Timişoara Polytechnic University .
On September 8, 1936, the day of the birth of the Virgin Mary , the church was given its purpose. Bishop Andrei Magier consecrated the church, which served as a cathedral for the Orthodox community until 1946 , after which the Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs took over this function.
description
location
The church is located on today's Piața Alexandru Mocioni , analogous to an earlier name for the square, the church used to be called Biserica din Piața Sinaia . The church stands on the southern side of the square, but it was built for the Romanian Orthodox believers of the II. District Iosefin . The district boundary follows the course of Bulevardul 16 Decembrie 1989 diagonally across the square. In the separate bell tower of the church, the six bells, cast in 1936, ring in the arpeggio chord .
The inside of the church
The architecture was inspired by the Byzantine style of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul . The floor inside is made of a combination of white and pink marble from Rușchița . The paintings in the "fresco bono" style are by the artists Catul Bogdan ( apse ) and Ioachim Miloia ( dome ). The painting of the dome was supplemented in 1958 with 18 biblical scenes by Anastasie Demian , and between 1983 and 1985 it was restored by Professor Victor Jurca and extended by 70 scenes. The iconostasis , chandelier and entrance gate were made of limewood by Ștefan Gajo , and Ștefan Novac's seats and benches were made of oak.
Busts in the churchyard
Since 2007 and 2008, in a small park in the churchyard, there are five busts of the founders of the church, Victor Vlad, Ioan Imbroane and Emmanuel Ungurianu, as well as Iacob Marian and Ioachim Miloia, created by the sculptor Aurel Ghoerghe Ardeleanu .
