The Sülz is a 24.7 km long, orographically right tributary of the Agger in North Rhine-Westphalia , including the Lindlar Sülz 48.5 km .
geography
course
The Sülz is created by the confluence of the Kürten and Lindlar Sülz near Hommerich in the Oberbergisches Kreis , directly on the western border with the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis , at 126 m above sea level. NHN . After the two source rivers meet, the Sülz flows primarily towards the south-southwest. The river runs in a striking double loop between Klefhaus and Brombach . The Sülz then flows through the areas of Brombach, Immekeppel and Oberauel before it crosses the A4 motorway at Untereschbach . In the further course the river meets Lehmbach , Sülze and Hoffnungsthal . In the Vierkotten area of the Rösrath district of Hoffnungsthal, the regional railway line Cologne – Gummersbach – Marienheide crosses the water; it is the only railway bridge over the river. The Sülz gave its name to the railway line to Hopesthal built in 1912 as the Sülztalbahn , from Hommerich the railway line, which was closed in 1966, ran along the Lindlar Sülz to Lindlar . At Lohmar the river empties at 62 m above sea level. NHN in the Agger. On its way from the confluence of its source rivers to the mouth, the Sülz overcomes 54 meters in altitude, which corresponds to an average bed gradient of 2.6 ‰. Their mean discharge here is a good 5 m³ / s

Comparison of Kürtener Sülz / Lindlarer Sülz | |||
---|---|---|---|
Surname | Length in km |
EZG in km² |
MQ in m³ / s |
Kürten Sülz | 20.5 | 63.9 | 1.41 |
Lindlar Sülz | 23.8 | 58.8 | 1.43 |
The comparison between Lindlarer Sülz and Kürtener Sülz shows that, from a hydrological point of view, the longer Lindlarer Sülz is the main branch of the Sülz river system due to its larger discharge (MQ) , while the Kürtener Sülz is a secondary branch of it despite its larger catchment area.

economy
Former mining
Until the closure of the last mine in the Bensberg ore district , the Lüderich mine, in 1978, the Sülz mining industry continued to operate in the entire catchment area . Heavy metals still find their way into the Sülz today, particularly through the earlier mining of non-ferrous metal ores , which was operated in the region for a long time .
Importance as a traffic route
From Hommerich, the L284 leads down through the Sülz valley to Rösrath. From here, the A3 motorway and the L288 accompany the Sülz to the confluence at Lohmar .
The Cologne-Mülheim – Lindlar railway from Rösrath to Lindlar ran through the Sülztal until 1966.
freetime and recreation
Every year in May there is a bathtub race in Hope Valley on the Sülz . In addition to original zinc tubs, imaginative rafts are also permitted. The wet and happy race is not only about sporting performance but also about original popular amusement. So that the whole thing does not remain a dry matter, the participants are also sprayed with water from fire hoses.
