Jakob Scheiner (born February 22, 1820 in Sohlbach , † December 8, 1911 in Potsdam ) was a German painter .

Life

Jakob Scheiner grew up in Ferndorf and began training in a surveying office in Siegen in 1835 . In 1845 he founded the J. Scheiner & Comp. in Siegen, which he gave up again in 1854.

From his marriage to Johanna Beyer in 1849 , the son Friedrich Wilhelm emerged on July 2, 1852 , who was to become a well-known painter.

In 1854 the Scheiner family moved to Cologne , where Jakob found a job with the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft two years later . In 1872, however, he started his own business as a freelance artist. He later worked as a painter in Cologne with his son Jakob. His choice of motifs - in addition to his home town of Siegerland, in particular the Cologne city wall, old town, harbor, traffic routes and industrial facilities ( industrial painting ) - included a detailed insight into the cityscape of Cologne in the 19th century .

Without any relevant training, Jakob Scheiner developed from a technical draftsman and commercial graphic artist via the profession of lithographer and landscape draftsman to a painter known beyond his homeland, whose works were also shown at world exhibitions in Paris in 1867 and Vienna in 1873 .

In 1908 Scheiner's wife died. He moved to Potsdam to live with his younger son Julius (astronomer at the observatory there), where he died in 1911. Jakob Scheiner is buried in the old cemetery .
