history

Mechernich station in 2007

The station was put into operation on July 1, 1865 together with the section of the Hürth-Kalscheuren-Ehrang line from Euskirchen to Mechernich. This gave the then Schleiden district its first rail connection, even if the station was still in the area of the neighboring municipality of Kommern , which was part of the Euskirchen district . Two years later, on September 1, 1867, the next section from Mechernich to Kall followed , until then the Mechernich station had served as the provisional terminus of the line. It received a comparatively unadorned reception building in a simple, classical style typical of the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . The building was equipped with first to third class waiting rooms and a train station. Over the years it has been adapted and expanded to meet increasing requirements. The area of the station came to the municipality of Mechernich in 1959, after the municipality of Kommern had applied in 1956 to rename the station.

In World War II the building was like many other stations and sections of Eifelstrecke badly damaged. Mechernich station, like the stations in Kall and Urft, received a new station building after the war. Its new construction began in 1961, after completion in 1963 the old building was demolished. In 2007, the DB AG sold the building to a Mechernich bus operator who had it extensively redesigned from 2009 to 2010 into the “Mechernich Gleispassage”. Inside, the toilets have been made barrier-free and a kiosk and a café / bakery set up.

While the trains that have been in use since 2013 have an entry height of 76 cm, the platforms in Mechernich are lower and therefore not yet barrier-free. The barrier-free conversion of the platforms is to take place in the course of 2020.

In addition to rail transport, the bus network was added in the 20th century.

The station is served by trains of the Vareo brand, using Alstom Coradia Lint 54 and 81 diesel multiple units (series 622 and 620). Regional and taxi bus lines also stop (see special types of local public transport ).

The new line S 15 will replace the RB 24 and RB 25. Then the stop in Mechernich and the stop in Weilerswist at the RE 12 and RE 22 should be omitted due to scheduling constraints .
