Double yellow

Metzen gained media attention in 2008 in the fall, in the game when he 1. FSV Mainz 05 against FC St. Pauli players Florian Bruns and Miroslav Karhan warned simultaneously. In doing so, he pulled two yellow cards out of his breast pockets in parallel, creating a split response. While the players of the teams and the media rated the action positively, the DFB sharply criticized Metzen and only scheduled him again for a game in the 2nd Bundesliga in March 2009. Although the simultaneous pronouncing of two yellow cards is not prohibited, the DFB argued that such actions would put a referee too much in the center of the action. The press was unimpressed and named Thomas Metzen “Eifel-Django”.
